Extremely Scary Ghost Elevator Prank in Brazil (video)

FOLLOW:

One thing is for sure: prank shows in Brazil aren’t fooling around. The Silvio Santos Program is responsible for this, probably the most terrifying prank we’ve ever seen. We’re quite certain we would have just fallen on the floor in the fetal position and never stopped screaming. Ghost kids aren’t funny. Especially not in tiny, enclosed spaces.

You win, Brazil.

Astronaut Scott Kelly will attempt longest spaceflight ever by an American

A former space shuttle commander whose twin brother is married to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords will attempt the longest spaceflight ever by an American.

NASA astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko will spend an entire year aboard the International Space Station beginning in 2015.

Both countries’ space agencies announced the names of the two veteran spacefliers on Monday. The extended mission was approved almost two months ago to provide a medical foundation for future missions around the moon, as well as far-flung trips to asteroids and Mars.

Both men already have lived aboard the space station for six months. NASA wanted experienced space station astronauts to streamline the amount of training necessary for a one-year stint. Officials had said the list of candidates was very short. They will begin training next year.

“Their skills and previous experience aboard the space station align with the mission’s requirements,” Bill Gerstenmaier, head of human exploration for NASA, said in a statement. “The one-year increment will expand the bounds of how we live and work in space and will increase our knowledge regarding the effects of microgravity on humans as we prepare for future missions beyond low-Earth orbit.”

Kelly’s identical twin brother, Mark Kelly, retired from the astronaut corps last year and moved to Tucson, Ariz., his wife’s hometown. The former congresswoman was critically wounded in an assassination attempt in January 2011, while Scott Kelly was living aboard the space station.

NASA said neither crew member was available Monday to comment and that news conferences would be held next week to outline the mission.

Astronauts normally spend about four to six months aboard the space station. The longest an American lived there was seven months, several years back.

Russia, though, will continue to hold the world space endurance record.

Four cosmonauts spent at least a year aboard the old Mir space station. A Russian physician, Valery Polyakov, logged nearly 15 continuous months there in the mid-1990s.

Boris Morukov, head of the Moscow-based Institute for Medical and Biological Problems, Russia’s main space medicine research center, told the Interfax news agency that communications and food rations for Kelly and Kornienko may be limited during their yearlong mission to better simulate interplanetary travel.

Kelly and Kornienko will launch aboard a Russian rocket from Kazakhstan. Americans must buy seats on Russian spacecraft now that NASA’s shuttles have retired to museums, until private U.S. companies have vessels capable of carrying human passengers. That’s still four or five years off.

Kelly is a 48-year-old, divorced Navy captain with two daughters. Kornienko, 52, a rocket engineer, is married with a daughter.

“We have chosen the most responsible, skilled and enthusiastic crew members to expand space exploration, and we have full confidence in them,” Russian Space Agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said in the announcement.

Xbox tablet header microsoft xbox 360 surface tablet

According to reports, Microsoft is moving forward with an Xbox Surface tablet. The 7-inch device will place a firm focus on gaming with a custom-built processor and modified version Windows OS. We’re likely to see the tablet before we see an actual new Xbox.

According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft is entering into the hardware business with a 7-inch gaming tablet. We’ve known for a while that Microsoft has had interest in building hardware for devices running its new Windows 8 operating system, but this tablet project appears to be an entirely new beast — though it’s been rumored since June.

The sources used in the report states the 7-inch gaming focused tablet would run on a modified version of Windows, similar to the Windows RT tablets, and would include “a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM.” While gaming will be the focus of this device, it may not be its explicit purpose as some other tablet functionality may remain in place.

It’s interesting to note the Xbox 720 is rumored to be built on Windows, likely a custom kernel of the operating system. This is the same way the Xbox Surface tablet is said to operate. The report from the Verge also made mention of the fact that the Xbox Surface tablet is being developed in Microsoft’s Silicon Valley offices and the company recently locked down Xbox-related buildings on its campus. This news means we could see an Xbox tablet before we see a new console from Microsoft.

Microsoft has yet to comment on the speculation, but all signs are pointing to an Xbox Surface offering from the Redmond based company. After some rough reviews on the first Surface, it makes sense that Microsoft might go back into its stable and come out with another offering branded with its powerhouse product. The Xbox brand is only eleven years old but is one of the most notable names in gaming. The mobile market has proven itself as a true embracer of games and entertainment, so slapping a well-recognized name in those fields onto a tablet seems like a no-brainer for marketing. If the Xbox 720 is truly being built on Windows and Microsoft is working on some sort of OS integration between its tablet and its gaming system, the Xbox Surface may become a must-have accessory for console gamers who remain loyal to Microsoft.

Nintendo not making profit off Wii U consoles, but they do with the software and games

Nintendo Wii U Profit

Nintendo’s Wii U is a capable little game console with a nifty touchscreen-equipped GamePad controller, but one thing it’s not is profitable off the bat. Traditionally, most console hardware is sold at a loss at launch because of high-cost components that provide cutting-edge graphics and processing power. To put it into perspective, it took five years for Microsoft’s (MSFT) Xbox business to become profitable and four years for Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 3 to get out of the red. Nintendo’s modus operandi has always been to make a profit on every console it sells, so it was shocking to hear the Wii U would be sold at a loss. But Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently sat down with MercuryNews and set the record straight, explaining that the Wii U isn’t losing much money per unit sold.

According to Fils-Aime, “as soon as we get the consumer to buy one piece of software, then that entire transaction becomes profit positive.” Fils-Aime didn’t comment on whether or not the $349.99 Deluxe Set that includes a copy of Nintendo Land is immediately profitable, or if the extra charging cradles, dock, and extra storage would offset the Wii U’s profitability.

iFixit’s recent Wii U teardown supports Fils-Aime’s claims by revealing the console uses a larger optical drive over a slim one and a bigger processor die to keep manufacturing costs down.

The Wii U launched on November 18th in North America and is still sold-out virtually everywhere. Fils-Aime has promised there will be more shipments of Wii U consoles coming in time for Black Friday and remains confident Nintendo will sell 5.5 million consoles in the current fiscal year.

Microsoft's Xbox Live Turns 10

Microsoft is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Xbox Live gaming network, which has involved in recent years beyond its console-centric origins to become the software giant’s “premier entertainment service for the TV, phone, PC and tablet.”

Xbox Live was launched on Nov. 15, 2002 as “the first comprehensive, online game arena fully dedicated to fast-action broadband gaming experiences,” Microsoft said in a blog postcommemorating a decade of supporting the service.

Initially available only in the United States and Canada, Xbox Live is now enjoyed in 41 countries and territories around the world, the blog noted. The service kicked off as an online network connecting users of the first-generation Xbox but really hit its stride with the growth of Microsoft’s current, wildly successful Xbox 360 platform.

Xbox Live is regarded as one of the prime drivers in the growth of gaming’s Achievement culture, with users encouraged to “rack up Gamerscores” on the network, Microsoft noted. Other milestones in the development of Xbox Live included the 2004 introduction of the Xbox Live Arcade, the emergence of customizable Avatars and the Avatar Marketplace in 2008 and 2009, and major Xbox Live dashboard overhauls in recent years.

Microsoft appeared most proud of the mushrooming of available features and services on Xbox Live, as well as the expansion of the network’s reach across multiple platforms beyond just its own Xbox console.

“Fast forward to 2012—now Xbox owners have entirely new entertainment experiences available at their fingertips, with great new apps like Xbox Music and Xbox Video, and Bing voice search now available in 15 markets. Xbox has become the entertainment hub in the living room with its more than 40 million members, and 2012 marked the year Xbox went beyond the console to create a new experience with Xbox SmartGlass,” the company gushed in its blog.

“The new app brings amazing multi-screen entertainment experiences to the devices you already own and love—your Windows 8 tablet or PC, Windows 8 phone, iOS or Android device—and enables them to talk to your TV through the Xbox console.”

During its stewardship of Xbox Live over the past decade, Microsoft has also managed to avoid a major security breach like the one suffered by rival Sony, whose PlayStation Network was crippled in the first half of 2011 by a hacking operation believed to have been carried out by the Anonymous collective.

Meanwhile, the U.K. magazine Xbox World recently offered a roundup of news and rumors about Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console, known on the Redmond campus by its code name Durango but often referred to by the media as the “Xbox 720.”

Xbox World is ending publication after its Dec. 12 issue and apparently wanted to go out with a bang.

The successor to the Xbox 360 is expected to arrive in time for the holidays next year. The next-gen console likely won’t be dubbed the Xbox 760, the magazine contends, but instead may simply be called the “Xbox” a la Apple’s naming conventions for its iPad tablets for the past two product cycles.

“Xbox World has been at the cutting edge of Durango coverage for over 12 months. Unless something really dramatic changes, everything we reveal in our penultimate issue will be revealed long before E3 in June,” said editor-in-chief Dan Dawkins in an interview with CVG.

Among other details, Xbox World claims the new Xbox will finally be able to support Blu-ray playback, a rumor that’s been making the rounds for the better part of a year now, and will support a brand-new version of Microsoft’s Kinect motion-tracking accessory that, according to earlier rumors, might even include a dedicated CPU for enhanced detection capabilities.

The next-gen console is also rumored to feature both TV output and input, as well as directional audio, an “innovative controller,” and support for augmented reality glasses at some point in the future. Durango sports a 16-core processor and 8GB of RAM, extrapolating from the developer SDK that Microsoft has already released.

MetroPCS dated 8 companies before marrying T-Mobile

MetroPCS has been playing the dating game over the past three years.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) — In a long, drawn-out dating process reminiscent of reality TV show “The Bachelor,” MetroPCS explored its options with almost every potential suitor in the country before finally settling on T-Mobile last month.

The discount wireless carrier entertained strategic partnership or takeover discussions with at least nine different companies, MetroPCS revealed in aregulatory filing on Friday.

The struggling — though still profitable — regional cell phone carrier did not name the other companies, but it dropped enough clues to help identify them. Since 2009, MetroPCS appears to have negotiated withDish Network (DISHFortune 500) (and two companies that Dish has since bought, including DBSD and Terrestar), Leap Wireless (LEAP),U.S. Cellular (USM), AT&T (TFortune 500), Sprint (SFortune 500) and Verizon (VZFortune 500) prior to agreeing to merge with T-Mobile.

It also hinted at the kind of twist that thrills dating show fans: A rejected suitor might jump back into the fray. The regulatory filing insinuated that Dish and Sprint could still return with a counter-offer. Shares of MetroPCS(PCSFortune 500) rose slightly on Monday on the news.
