All signs point to Twitter IPO in 2014, research firm says
Twitter is gearing up for an IPO in 2014, argued a New York analyst firm in a new report that cites the microblogging giant’s recent management moves, its strategic partnerships, its growing mobile revenue, and other factors as evidence for the move.

(Credit: Greencrest Capital)
In the report, titled “Twitter, Inc. on flight path to 2014 IPO(Summary, PDF),” Greencrest Capital laid out its theories for why the company might soon go public.
“Is Twitter positioning for an initial public offering (IPO) in 2014? The micro-blogging site has made a number of announcements since our last report, including management changes, site enhancements, global expansion, and new strategic alliances — all supportive of a possible IPO in 2014. Furthermore, the company is seeing strong traction in its monetization platform and continued robust user metrics,” wrote Greencrest analysts Santosh Rao and Max Wolff in the report. “Our core, positive thesis on Twitter is based on four growth opportunities ahead: (i) advertisement-based monetization features that are gaining traction; (ii) strategic alliances with leading companies and brands; (iii) strong mobile uptake of Twitter’s service; and (iv) expanding international footprint.”
Greencrest pegged Twitter’s valuation at between $10.5 billion and $11 billion “by late 2013 or early 2014.” That’s lower than the valuation it offered in another report earlier this month in which Greencrest said that Twitter was likely worth more than $11 billion. It also predicted that Twitter’s 2014 revenue would total $1.028 billion, up from estimates of $605 million in 2013 and $295 million in 2012. And it said that Twitter’s forays into mobile advertising are paying off, with U.S. mobile ad revenue likely to hit $382.8 million in 2014, up from estimates of $248.9 million this year, and $134.9 million last year.

To support its argument for a 2014 IPO, Greencrest cited a shakeup in Twitter’s management ranks that took place just prior to Christmas. Among those changes were Twitter’s former CFO Ali Rowghani taking over the role of COO, and former Zynger Treasurer Mike Gupta being brought on as the new CFO. Those moves, along with Twitter’s hire of former Newsvine CEO Mike Davidson as vice president of design “suggest the company is putting together a team of seasoned executives to guide it successfully through the IPO process,” Greencrest wrote.
Twitter did not respond to a request for comment.
Partnership with Nielsen Media
Another Twitter move that Greencrest offered as evidence of its plans is the company’s recent partnership with Nielsen Media on the so-called Nielsen Twitter TV Rating System. Under this initiative, “[b]oth parties hope to make the Nielsen Twitter Rating metric the new social television standard,” Greencrest wrote. “We believe the partnership is a win-win for both firms. Twitter, in particular, is expected to use the data collected as a means to attract new advertisers and give existing marketers and brands better data in terms of reach and more strategic ad placement.”
Greencrest also cited a recent Twitter partnership with Pinterest — which it said will support Twitter cards — as positive movement for the microblogging company. That arrangement “should play to Twitter’s advantage due to Pinterest’s high traffic referral rates, and the ability for users to tweet pinned photos to their feed,” Rao and Wolff wrote.
The two analysts next lauded Twitter’s recent service improvements, especially those that help make it easier for advertisers to work with. Rao and Wolff cited the launch of Twitter’s new photo tools as a strong step forward in its increasingly bitter competition for users with Instagram. As well, they wrote that Twitter’s promoted tweets advertising program “has become more focused, with promotions directed to users who are more likely to convert to sales (using keyword targeting),” and they praised Twitter’s Certified Products Program, which aims to keep the quality of Twitter-related apps high and secure.
Boosted revenue opportunities
A big part of Greencrest’s bullishness stems from the firm’s evaluation of Twitter’s advertising initiatives. Rao and Wolff said they felt that Twitter’s promoted tweets, promoted trends, and promoted accounts were all “gaining traction,” leading to improved revenue opportunities. Twitter has also been building out its self-service advertising efforts, especially for small businesses, and Greencrest called out American Express’ making the system available to its cardholders as a boost for Twitter’s bottom line.

(Credit: Greencrest Capital)
Another big area of improvement for Twitter is mobile, Greencrest wrote. Twitter’s increased mobile ad revenue is a reflection of that, and Rao and Wolff noted that Twitter has had faster growth on mobile (75 percent growth from 2010 to 2011) than rivals Facebook and LinkedIn. However, Twitter’s mobile ad revenue numbers pale compared to those of Google, Facebook, and even Pandora.
Still, the analysts think that Twitter is “relatively early in its monetization potential,” and that it should see significant growth in each of its major revenue generators.

Apple CEO downplays reports of iPhone component cuts
Apple CEO downplays reports of iPhone component cuts
Apple’s Tim Cook says reports that the company was cutting orders on iPhone displays are short-sighted — but doesn’t actually say they were wrong.

(Credit: Apple)
After a week of silence, Apple has weighed in on reports that it cut orders on components for production of future iPhone. As in, it’s not happy about them, but it’s not about to confirm or deny them.
According to chief executive Tim Cook, the company’s supply chain is “complicated,” and so people shouldn’t look too deeply into any one aspect of it to see the bigger picture.
“Even if a particular data point were factual, it would be impossible to interpret the data point for what it means to our overall business,” Cook told analysts during the company’s first quarter earnings conference call this afternoon. “There’s an inordinate long list of things that would make any single data point not a great proxy for what’s going on,” he added.
A pair of stories earlier this month – one from Japan’s Nikkei and another later in the day from the Wall Street Journal — claimed Apple cut its component orders for the iPhone by nearly half in December. The suggestion from both was that demand for Apple’s iPhone 5 had declined, causing Apple to slow down on manufacturing orders for more devices.
Apple played up sales of the iPhone, which were the bright spot in a record quarter that stillcame in below what Wall Street was expecting in revenue and sales of iPads and Macs.

Apple: $7.3 billion in first-quarter sales in China

Whatever disappointment investors may have with Apple’s latest earnings report, nothing could rub away the shine from the company’s strong sales out of China.
Apple’s sales in the “Greater China” region, encompassing China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, were $7.3 billion in the quarter, a 60 percent year-over-year increase, according to CEO Tim Cook, who spoke during a conference call today following the publication of Apple’s fiscal first-quarter numbers.
“This is incredibly high,” he said, adding that the comparison was even stronger than it seems at first blush, as last year’s sales quarter included an extra week. “The underlying growth is higher than that. We saw exceptional growth in iPhones, into the triple digits. We shipped the iPad very late in the quarter in December and despite that, (we) saw very nice growth.”
Apple now has 11 retail outlets in China, and Cook said the company has “many more to open there. In our premium resellers, we went over 400, up from a little over 200 in the previous year. We increased iPhone point of sale from over 7,000 to over 17,000 there. This isn’t nearly what we need; we’re not even close to that, but we’re making great progress.

Tim Cook dances around the Apple TV question -- again
The CEO pulls out the ol’ “we can continue to pull the string and see where it leads us” line when asked about Apple’s future foray into television.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had a bit of deja vu today when an analyst asked him to expound on Apple’s future contributions to the TV industry.
“There’s a lot we can contribute in this space so we can continue to pull the string and see where it leads us,” he said during Apple’s first quarter earnings call today, after remarking on the growth of sales for the Apple TV device.
The company sold more than 2 million Apple TV devices last quarter, according to Cook. This is up from 1.4 million devices from the same period last year.
Cook’s answer sounds a lot like his response to a similar question from the same analyst, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, during last year’s call.
Instead of answering the question, which relates to speculation over the possibility of an Apple-built TV, Cook pointed to the success of the Apple TV device. He said the device is favored by a “small niche” of people, a group that has grown. That’s sort of different from “hobby,” right?
Related stories
The company said in October that it sold 5.3 million Apple TV set-top boxes in 2012. The device connects Web videos and other media to the traditional television, but it isn’t a full blown substitute for TV.
Cook previously hinted at a possible Apple-built television. Analysts have gone back and forth on whether this will happen, but many believe that TV is the next industry Apple could enter and revolutionize, just like it’s done with smartphones and tablets.

VP Biden to Hangout, talk gun control on Google+

(Credit: Whitehouse.gov)
President Obama’s “Ask Me Anything” on Reddit drew more than 5 million views, and now Vice President Joe Biden is going to try his hand at a different newfangled social-media real-time electronic telegraph technology.
In an event dubbed a “Fireside Hangout,” the vice president will be hanging out in Google+ starting at 10:45 a.m. PT tomorrow to discuss the recently released White House policy recommendations onreducing gun violence in the wake of a downright awful 2012 that was plagued by a number of mass shootings in the United States.
Joining Biden for the 30-minute Hangout will be social-media gurus Guy Kawasaki and Phil DeFranco, with Hari Sreenivasan from “PBS NewsHour” moderating. Hmm, wonder if Biden really knows what he’s got himself into this time?
You can join the Hangout via the White House Google+ page or YouTube channel. It will also be streamed on Whitehouse.gov.

Judging by the agenda for the Hangout, I’m thinking this is not the time to appeal the recent White House response to the popular petition to build a real-life Death Star. Good news is that Google says Fireside Hangouts will continue with other members of the administration, so perhaps save it for the new defense secretary.

GameStick Kickstarter adds new indie dev-targeted tier, trades $250 for six months of 100% revenue
The PlayJam folks are taking another cue from the Android-powered Ouya with their own GameStick, today adding a dev-focused $ 250 tier to the already successful Kickstarter campaign. The twist with GameStick’s dev tier is its aimed at indies, and it offers a six month window of 100 percent revenue on any games released before July 2013 (in addition to a GameStick bundle, of course). The dev version costs quite a bit more than the usual $ 79 asking price, but guaranteeing full revenue near launch may be a worthy tradeoff for developers looking to cash-in on early adopters (the industry standard is a 70 / 30 split, with game devs taking the larger share). Sadly, you won’t get the unit any earlier than the general public; PlayJam’s putting an April window on launch. The deal’s only available to 250 developers — or at least the first 250 people to buy in — so interested parties may want to act quickly.

London & San Francisco; January 23rd, 2013; The team behind GameStick today announced a new

“In the few short weeks following the campaign launch, we have had hundreds of developers sign
up for access to our SDK, from established games studios to smaller Indie developers”, says Baroova,
Head of Games at GameStick, “what better way to repay this incredible support and to accelerate
the big screen gaming revolution than with an offer that directly rewards those who were first to
support us?”
The team behind GameStick have made a number of popular announcements this week in response
to direct requests from the Kickstarter community such as the inclusion of an SDMicro memory
expansion slot on the device itself and a dock providing support for peripheral hardware such as
keyboard, mice, microphones and cameras.
Baroovahas been coordinating with many top named studios as well as indies developers happy to
publically support GameStick in its quest to bring affordable gaming to the big screen:
Roman Tisserand, CTO and Co-Founder of DotEmusaid, “We are very excited to bring our portfolio
on games (including Another World, R-TYPE and Raiden Legacy) to GameStick”
Says Jason Kingsley OBE, Founder of Rebellion and owner of AD2000, “The video games industry
has benefitted time and time again from ideas that disrupt the status quo. A new wave of devices
such as GameStick – built on truly open platforms that bring affordable gaming to the big screen
could prove the start of an interesting revolution – one which I thoroughly support and watch with
interest.”
Hendrik Lesser, Board Member of the German Association of Game Developers added, ” I think
the opportunity for micro consoles such as GameStick has never been bigger than now. They are
perfectly suited to disrupt the console space.”
Says Paulina Bozek, creator of SingStar and founder of Inensu added; “GameStick’s ability to
support peripheral hardware such as microphones and dance mats is a great opportunity for indie
developers looking to create a truly social experience around the big-screen”.
Concluded Chris Bergstresser, EVP Miniclip, “What GameStick offers is a direct and easy route to the
big screen. We look forward to working with them to bring some of our classic titles to TV”

Windows Phone 7.8 SDK released, includes emulator images, no new APIs
Microsoft just announced today’s release of the Windows Phone 7.8 SDK, which should be a wee bit helpful for developers wanting to test their apps and Live Tiles with the revised OS. The new SDK includes two software images (build 8858), one that simulates devices with 512MB of RAM and another for 256MB handsets. The primary purpose of this release is to let developers test their Live Tiles with Windows Phone 7.8, which supports resizable Live Tiles. While it’s not much of a surprise, the new SDK includes no new APIs over the Windows Phone 7.5 SDK, which further reinforces the impression of Windows Phone 7.8 as a largely cosmetic update. On the plus side, legacy support is alive and kicking, as Microsoft promises the SDK update won’t alter existing Windows Phone 7.1 emulator images. For more details of this release, be sure to hit up the source link.

ESPN signs with Ooyala's video embedding service to bake touchdown videos into tweets
You may not be able to share those retrograde pictures of your dinner direct to your Twitter worshippers any more, but at least you can commemorate Kobe’s latest slammed-dunkings. ESPN has signed a deal with video sharing service Ooyala that’ll see highlight videos embedded inside tweets so you never have to leave the warm embrace of your live feed. Ooyala’s also offering its SDK for others to follow suit, and while the press release below talks of “monetization” and “optimized engagement,” we prefer to think the pair are doing it to fill that Instagram-shaped hole in our tweets.
Ooyala Delivers In-Stream Video Viewing on Twitter
Twitter Video Card solution creates new ways to discover, share and monetize video; ESPN first to adopt
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Ooyala, the leading video streaming and monetization platform provider, today announced that it has developed a Twitter Video Card solution, in close collaboration with Twitter, that enables Ooyala customers a turnkey solution to embed videos directly into their Twitter streams for instant playback. Previously, users were only able to include a link to a video in Twitter. This solution inserts a thumbnail of the video directly into the stream so followers can click and play directly without leaving Twitter.
“Consumers today are at the intersection of social and mobile, and demanding easy and fast access to video content. Our ability to deliver video directly into the Twitter stream is a major step forward for publishers who want to drive viewer engagement in real-time.”
First deployed by sports broadcaster ESPN to better serve its 24 million online video viewers, Ooyala’s Twitter Card solution provides media companies, broadcasters and brands a new way to distribute and monetize video content delivered via Twitter across desktops and mobile devices. In addition, the solution can increase the discovery and sharing of video content and optimize engagement through social and mobile by eliminating the barriers to view content directly on Twitter.
“Twitter is a growing source of inbound referral traffic and outbound content distribution for online media publishers and broadcasters,” said Jonathan Wilner, senior director, business product management at Ooyala. “Consumers today are at the intersection of social and mobile, and demanding easy and fast access to video content. Our ability to deliver video directly into the Twitter stream is a major step forward for publishers who want to drive viewer engagement in real-time.”
As a result of the close collaboration with Twitter, the Ooyala solution has been certified by Twitter, meaning customers can quickly and easily integrate and distribute video content directly into their streams across all platforms — including desktop, mobile web and native smartphone and tablet apps for both iOS and Android — and trust that the player will work seamlessly within Twitter. The solution works via an Ooyala Twitter SDK and automatic hosting for Twitter Cards. The turnkey API from Ooyala automatically generates the necessary Twitter tags so that a video can be inserted onto a video landing page to enable Twitter Cards.
Powerful Solution when paired with Discovery
The technology works seamlessly with Ooyala Discovery, which enables video content providers to increase view-related revenue by algorithmically recommending highly relevant content within the Ooyala Player. For example, if a user watches a highlight from a football game within the ESPN Twitter stream, they could receive a recommendation to also watch highlights from the post-game press conference. Personalized content recommendations can further drive user engagement and monetization for each video share in Twitter.
Opening Revenue Streams
In addition to benefiting consumers, this technology opens up new revenue streams for Ooyala customers. It enables the distribution of ad-supported video content across client-owned and consumer Twitter properties, magnified by sharing tendencies of Twitter users. It also opens the door for video integration into Promoted Tweet advertising campaigns across Twitter.
Customers that take advantage of Ooyala analytics will also have extensive data on the performance of their videos through Twitter Video Cards, in addition to the data they already receive on their websites and/or apps, allowing them to further optimize their video content.
About Ooyala
Ooyala delivers personalized video experiences across all screens and is the leader in online video management, publishing, analytics and monetization. Our integrated suite of technologies and services give content owners the power to expand audiences through deep insights that drive increased viewer engagement and revenue from video.
Companies using Ooyala technology include Telstra, ESPN, Pac-12 Enterprises, Miramax, Bloomberg, Telegraph Media Group, Telefonica, The North Face, Rolling Stone, Dell, Sephora and Yahoo! Japan. Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Ooyala has offices in New York City, London, Sydney, Tokyo and Guadalajara, Mexico. The company works with premier reseller and technology partners throughout the Americas, Europe, Africa, Japan and the Asia-Pacific region. For more information visit www.ooyala.com.

Nintendo Wii U to get Virtual Console service this spring
Nintendo’s Satoru Iwata just announced via Nintendo Direct that Virtual Console will be available on the Wii U this spring. Previously, the service was only accessible via the Wii emulator on Nintendo’s new console, but will now arrive on the eShop at some unspecified time in Q2 and feature GameBoy Advance titles for the first time. Before that can happen, however, the company wants to implement two key software updates designed to address system performance issues. Nintendo’s also devised a pricing scheme to offer users who’ve amassed a retro gaming library a more affordable way to re-download past VC purchases (as opposed to that clunky transfer system). For any previously downloaded NES ($ 4.99 – $ 5.99) and SNES ($ 7.99 – $ 8.99) titles, users will have to fork over $ 1.00 and $ 1.50, respectively.
And, as part of a celebration of the Famicom’s 30th anniversary, Nintendo’s offering up a trial campaign that’ll make certain titles available to download for 30 cents over a 30 day period. Starting in January and running through July, users will be able to demo one select title per month from the eShop: Balloon Fight, F-Zero, Punch-Out featuring Mr. Dream, Kirby’s Adventure, Super Metroid, Yoshi and Donkey Kong. But, take heed, these teases will only last for the month they’re offered and, hopefully, entice you to pay full price when the service officially launches on Wii U.

Nintendo Outlines Its Vision for Wii U, Including Launching Virtual Console and How Miiverse and Second-Screen Gaming Features Will Continue to Evolve
NOTE: Multimedia available here
REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo President Satoru Iwata unleashed Wii U news in an installment of Nintendo Direct today as he outlined Nintendo’s future plans for the console. Iwata revealed how the Wii U launch lineup will be bolstered by a long list of top game franchises headed for the new console. These are games that longtime players and newcomers alike will love to play, and everyone will be experiencing them in new ways, thanks to the integrated second-screen experiences enabled by the Wii U GamePad controller. Iwata also detailed a number of enhancements designed to make the Wii U game experience more social, even if people are not playing in the same room.
“The fun of video games is not only just playing games, but also sharing experiences together with people – even though they live far away, their skill levels are different or their experience does not happen at the same time,” Iwata said. “We want Wii U to be the system that brings everyone together.”

Virtual Console
Virtual Console for Wii U: A spring system update will add Virtual Console software to the Nintendo eShop for Wii U. The service will launch right after the spring update and will include a selection of NES and Super NES games, with Game Boy Advance games to be added in the future. The prices for NES and Super NES Virtual Console games for Wii U will be the same as they were for the Virtual Console on Wii. People who have already purchased the Wii version of a certain NES or Super NES Virtual Console game and transferred it to their Wii U console can buy the enhanced Wii U version of the same game for the reduced price of $ 1 for NES games and $ 1.50 for Super NES games.
Classic Games for 30 Cents! To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the release of the Famicom in Japan (which was known as the NES in the United States), Nintendo is making one NES or Super NES game available each month now through July at the anniversary price of just 30 cents. Each game will be available at that price for 30 days, and the first is the NES game Balloon Fight, which is now available in the Nintendo eShop for Wii U.

Nintendo Wii U to get Virtual Console service this spring
Nintendo Wii U getting two system updates in spring and summer to optimize UI speed
Nintendo’s Wii U is getting two title updates in the coming months, both aimed at optimizing the sluggish speed of the console. The first of the two, launching in spring, will make software load more quickly, as well as adding Virtual Console directly to the Wii U (rather than accessed through the virtual Wii). The second, launching in summer, will get users back to the Wii U main menu more quickly. Both additions are more than welcome — the Wii U’s greatest flaw is its unbelievably slow user interface. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the news this morning during a Nintendo Direct broadcast, where he also unveiled news about Virtual Console heading to the Wii U, and an upcoming Miiverse update giving users access via smart devices.

Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos landing in India the first week of February
Earlier today, Samsung announced the availability of its dual-sim Galaxy Grand Duos for markets in India. Shipping with an included flip cover, the budget-friendly phablet will sell for Rs 21,500 ($ 400). Loaded with mid-range specs, the device’s highlights include a 5-inch WVGA display, a 1.5GHz 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with Android 4.1 running the show. We recently managed to get some hands-on time with a pre-production build of this handset, which felt like a hefty GSIII, but performed more like an overgrown Galaxy S III mini. However, if you’ve got phablets on the brain and you’re balling on a budget, this thrifty hybrid device begins shipping the first week of February.
Update: This post originally (and incorrectly) indicated a 1.5GHz processor. The correct number is 1.2GHz.

Insert Coin: Securifi Almond+ takes the touchscreen router to the next level
In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line.
We’ve been talking about Securifi’s Almond router a fair amount, since the new year rolled around. Darren put the thing through its paces, just after the company announced plans to release its successor — or, rather, plans to Kickstart the followup. As of this morning, the crowdfunding push has landed. The Taipei-based company launched the Kickstarter page for the next generation of its beloved touchscreen router.
The latest version, which we had the opportunity to play around with at CES, features a 2.8-inch display, as before, but adds some much welcomed additions, including support for 802.11ac, Zigbee and Z-Wave. The former promises a WiFi speed bump, the latter two bring the promise of extended home automation. Speaking of home automation, the Almond+ lets you control things like security alerts, heating and light control on the go with your iOS or Android device.
Securifi’s currently working toward a $ 250,000 goal, and has some solid prizes to offer up. Those who pledge $ 95 or more will get the $ 99 router, along with free shipping. Pledging at $ 129 will get you one of a number of Kickstarter exclusive colors. Those winning routers are set to ship around September.
Previous project update: At last look, the Pinoccio microprocessor is well on its way to becoming a real device, with around $ 44,000 pledged of its $ 63,000 goal, with a full 22 days left to get in on the action.

Nokia Lumia 510 will come to the UK, appears briefly at Phones 4U
If you liked the look of the previously India-bound Lumia 510 but live on the other side of the world, there’s now no need to fret. Nokia has just confirmed to Omio that they will be bringing their cheapest Windows Phone device to Blighty — although there’s no word yet on UK-specific pricing or willing carriers. The phone was priced up at $ 200 when announced, which will net you a humble 4-inch display and 800MHz processor. Retailer Phones 4U accidentally let the Windows Phone 7.8 slab slip out onto its coming soon page and although it’s already been erased, we’ve added some screen-grab proof after the break.

Intel will discontinue desktop motherboards following Haswell release
The decline in desktop PC sales is beginning to ripple throughout the industry, as Intel has revealed plans to wind down its desktop motherboard division over the next three years. According to AnandTech, the company will release boards that are based on the Haswell architecture before completely suspending development. Moving forward, Intel will instead focus its efforts on creating form factor reference designs for the Ultrabook, tablet and desktop markets. Curiously, one product that’s currently immune from the announcement is the Next Unit of Computing (NUC), a miniature barebones system that will see continual development from Intel. While custom PC builders will likely take a moment to reflect upon the news, it’s said that the transition is unlikely to affect the company’s workforce. Instead, current employees will be absorbed into other divisions within Intel. After all, there’s no point in showing talented engineers to the door, even in an age of market shifts.

Logitech gambled big on video conferencing, lost
Logitech’s PR machine is on the loose this morning, trying to dampen expectations before the company announces its quarterly financial results later in the day. The key message is that we shouldn’t expect any great shakes from the video conferencing side of the business. In fact, there’ll be a $ 211 million charge against earnings, which is big enough to wipe out the previous quarter’s income four times over, and which stems entirely from this source of pain:
“The enterprise video conferencing industry has experienced a slowdown in recent quarters and consequently, through this period, the video conferencing unit has not sustained the growth Logitech originally anticipated.”
That’s a blanket statement, describing a whole section of the industry and not just pinning the blame on LifeSize, the video conferencing company that Logitech picked up in 2009 for $ 405 million. It so happens that Polycom and Cisco have also reported ongoing slides in video conferencing sales, so Logitech’s explanation is entirely justified — not that it makes the LifeSize acquisition look any smarter.

White House unveils National Day of Civic Hacking to solve problems with open data
Sure, the freshly announced National Day of Civic Hacking may sound like it’ll occupy a single square on your calendar, but the White House wants folks to get together on June 1st and 2nd to solve problems with a bit of coding and info from Uncle Sam. Government agencies including the Census Bureau, NASA and the Department of Labor are set to serve up publicly available data for developers and entrepreneurs to concoct solutions for problems affecting cities, states and the country. In addition to government support, the effort is being organized by outfits including Code for America, Random Hacks of Kindness and Eric Schmidt’s Innovation Endeavors. Currently, 27 cities have events scheduled during the weekend in question, but the initiative’s coordinators are looking to spawn even more powwows throughout the US. If you’d like to pitch in or submit ideas for challenges participants should tackle, hit the source links below.

Sony grows E-mount lens collection with 20mm pancake, 18-200mm power zoom
One of the most common criticisms circling Sony’s NEX lineup and mirrorless cameras as a whole is limited lens selection, so we’re always happy to see new high-end optics make their debut. Today, Sony’s doing its part to make its products more appealing by adding two new lenses (for a total of 13): a 20mm f/2.8 pancake and a 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 OSS powered-zoom optic, which first made its debut with the VG30 camcorder, but will now be available as a standalone purchase. That first model will ship in April for $ 350, while the zoom lens will be available in March for $ 1,200. Photography buffs can catch a few more details in the PR just past the break.
Sony Expands Lens Lineup for α E-Mount Camera System with New Wide-Angle and Telephoto Models
New 20mm f/2.8 “pancake” lens and Video-friendly 18-200mm f/3.5 – f/6.3 “Power Zoom” lens extend creative possibilities
SAN DIEGO, Jan. 22, 2013 – Sony is expanding its popular E-mount camera system with the addition of two new lenses compatible with all α E-Mount cameras and semi-professional camcorders.
New 20mm F2.8 ‘pancake’ wide angle lens (model SEL20F28)
When mounted on any Sony α E-Mount camera, the sharp new SEL20F28 “pancake” lens creates an exceptionally versatile, portable package ideal for a broad range of everyday shooting opportunities ranging from interiors to landscapes, street photography, casual snapshots and more.
The new lens features an ultra-slim design approximately 20mm from lens front to back, and with its wide angle of view (30mm on 35mm equivalent) and bright F2.8 aperture, it produces excellent contrast, resolution and clarity across the frame for both still image and full HD video shooting.
New 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS Powered Telephoto Zoom Lens (model SELP18200)
Originally offered only as a kit lens for the new NEX-VG30 camcorder introduced this past fall, the new SELP18200 powered telephoto zoom lens will now be available for purchase as a stand-alone lens.
Designed for serious videographers, the high-quality lens offers a generous 11x magnification range and whisper-quiet power zoom mechanics, focusing and aperture operation. This allows for smooth cinematic transitions when adjusting zoom level or manual settings during shooting. It features a comfortably positioned zoom lever that works with a switch on the lens barrel, allowing zoom speed to be selected in three different steps – from slow, beautiful shifts in perspective to dramatic crash-zoom effects. Zoom can also be controlled directly from compatible NEX-VG900, NEX-VG30 and NEX-FS700 (requires firmware update) video cameras.
The new lens also has built-in Optical SteadyShot[TM], which cuts the effects of camera shake and minimizes camera blur while shooting handheld at slower shutter speeds. Additionally, Active Mode further enhances stabilization at the wide end of the 11x zoom range ensuring smooth, stable footage even if the shooter is in motion. While the new SELP18200 lens is optimized for video, it’s also a flexible choice for shooting still photography – from expansive landscapes to high impact close-ups of wildlife or athletes – with Sony’s α E-Mount range of interchangeable lens still cameras.
Sony α E-mount lens family expansion
These new models expand the Sony E-mount family to 13 native E-mount lenses plus two converters, covering virtually any shooting situation for photographers and videographers alike. Spanning ultra-wide angle, powerful telezoom, macro and fast, bright primes, the range includes premium optics by Sony and Carl Zeiss, and offers refined performance and easy handling throughout the line.
Pricing and Availability
The new E 20mm F2.8 (SEL20F28) wide-angle prime lens will be available this April for about $ 350.
The new E PZ18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS (SELP18200) motorized telezoom lens will be available this March for about $ 1200.
The Sony α family of cameras, camcorders, lenses and accessories can be purchased at Sony retail stores, online at www.store.sony.com and at all other authorized retailers throughout the Sony dealer network.
